据导演何群透露，《新青年》将区别于传统主旋律史诗剧的严肃刻板，适当加入轻喜剧的叙事成分，呈现一种幽默的风格。何群曾表示，该剧涉及辛亥革命、二次革命、新文化运动、第一次世界大战、五四运动、中国共产党成立、南昌起义等历史事件，但采取的不是正面强攻的方式，而是聚焦大历史背景中的小人物命运。
新作的主角是一位为了变强而进行着旅行战斗的少年钢银河，主角以战斗陀螺为契机不断地结识新的朋友和面临新的挑战，从中得到历练。从主角的名字和剧情简介来看就知道本片是偏向热血的少年战斗类作品，虽然从题材和类型上预计本作想要在佳作如云的4月新番当中脱颖而出还是有一定难度的，不过届时还是值得我们一探究竟
